Scientific Anglers' backing is very thin, highly durable and the colors are colorfast. We've been using it for years on everything from steelhead and salmon to tuna and billfish and haven't run into a single inconsistancy. We offer our backing off of our bulk spools and will professionally load the exact amount you need onto a new reel (if you purchase the reel and backing together). In the shopping cart page, under "Quantity", please indicate the number of yards you would like loaded onto your reel. For example, if you need 150 yards, change the quantity to 150 for this item. If you order a line, we will also pre-load the line so your new reel will come with the reel, backing, and line all ready to go. (Choose "No Reel" if you do not wanted it loaded onto a reel and we will load the backing onto a plastic spool).

Use 20-pound backing for most 6-weight and lighter rods.

Use 30-pound backing for 8-weight and larger rods.
